rollercon: podo

RollerCon is an international five-day convention held annually in Las Vegas for members of the roller derby community. Every year thousands of roller derby players, referees, park and dance skaters, officials, vendors, announcers, photographers and fans from all over the world assemble to share their love for the sport.

I was entrusted to create the design for one of the hallmark events at RollerCon, the Pants Off, Dance Off (PODO). They wanted a well known roller derby figure featured on the design along with vendors and details for the upcoming event. The goal was to draw attention to the event, peak the audience's interest and increase attendance by drawing in new attendees to the event.

I created a design with a nightclub feel to it using striking, contrasting colors and lighting effects to attract the newer, younger demographic and new attendees. I worked remotely with the founders of the convention and event promoters reviewing initial ideas and layouts while creating and revising assets in the custom Photoshop design. The advertising campaign was a great success with the event almost doubling the attendees from the previous year.

rollercon: the vr

The Vagine Regime (VR) is an international organization of LGBTQ roller derby skaters and allies, boasting over 20 chapters worldwide who promote LGBTQ rights around the world and provide a community that supports all the derby community, their sexualities and gender identities. Since it's inception in 2008, it has continued to grow and even become the subject of countless events and documentaries.

The VR commissioned me to create a promotional poster that would highlight their organization's headlined events during the RollerCon convention in Las Vegas. They wanted to incorporate the VR's logo, the universal LGBTQ rainbow colors and to have all the events to stand out on their own. The goal was to advertise all of the available events, which had increased that particular year and to attract volunteers to those events.

I took the opportunity to capitalize on the Vegas event by featuring a Vegas type showgirl on roller skates. I worked remotely with the founder of the VR organization reviewing initial ideas and layouts while creating and revising assets in the custom Photoshop design. The founder of the organization was thrilled with the results and the promotional campaign successfully increased the number of volunteers that year.

hidden city derby girls

The Hidden City Derby Girls (HCDG) are an amateur roller derby league based in Oceanside, CA.  Founded 16 years ago, the league contributes and hosts a variety events including skate-a-thons, toy drives, and occasionally volunteers for different local events.

HCDG requested my services to create a series of logos representing the league, the travel team, and two of their local teams. They requested an entire re-branding from their previous 2008 black and white design to new full color logos. Their intended use was to use all designs on advertising, merchandise, and promotional material with a goal of increasing local fan base and interested volunteer participants.

By working directly with both of the league's founders and the Board of Directors, I created an updated, empowering design for the league logo with a variation of that logo reflecting the travel team name and as requested both of the local team logos were created based on their team names. For the preceding 5 years, my designs successfully increased awareness of the league in the local community, doubling merchandise sales, increasing fan attendance and new recruitment by approximately 15%.

Over the years I have designed everything from logos, business cards, brochures and flyers for various businesses, charities and non-profit organizations such as the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego raising over $15,000 for the charity.

You can view some of the designs by viewing my archive.
